British Aikido Federation  – Yudansha tests update (August 2013)

Following a meeting with Kanetsuka sensei at sthe spring course, at summer school the technical and grading committee met and revised the rules in relation to qualifying to take yudansha tests at future summer schools.  The new requirements are as follows;

1st kyu to shodan was previously a minimum of 2 years within the BAF.  The agreement is that when people have obtained 1st kyu they should be eligible (with their instructor’s consent) to take shodan after 1 year.  In that 1 year period they MUST attend a minimum of 2 courses taught by Kanetsuka sensei at Oxford and the spring course.  They must also keep a record of all classes attended during the year with BAF shidoin and they must attend more than their own dojo, if their instructor is a shidoin.

Shodan to nidan was previously a minimum of 3 years within the BAF.  The agreement is that this be reduced to 2 years (with their instructor’s consent)  but in that period they MUST attend a minimum of 2 courses each year in Oxford with Kanetsuka sensei, spring course each year and summer school each year.

Nidan to sandan was previously a minimum of 4 years within the BAF.  The agreement is that this be reduced to 3 years (with their instructor’s consent)  but in that period they MUST attend a minimum of 2 courses each year in Oxford with Kanetsuka sensei, spring course each year and summer school each year.

Sandan to yondan was previously a minimum of 5 years within the BAF.  The agreement is that this be reduced to 4 years (with their instructor’s consent)  but in that period they MUST attend a minimum of 2 courses each year in Oxford with Kanetsuka sensei, spring course each year and summer school each year.

It must be stressed that the above timings are the minimum requirement and it is up to each potential candidate’s instructor to give approval for a member to attempt a test and if the candidates instructor is not a shidoin, the application, as now, must be countersigned by either a shidoin or Kanetsuka sensei.
